LONDON — July 7, 2025
Novak Djokovic reminded the world once again why he's still a force to be reckoned with on grass, as he powered past Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets to book his place in the Wimbledon 2025 quarterfinals.
Djokovic, who turned 38 this year, showed little sign of wear, winning 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(4) in front of an electrified Centre Court crowd. The Serbian great, gunning for his eighth Wimbledon crown, was composed, clinical, and in control for most of the match.
"Alex is incredibly fast and tough to break down, but I trusted my game and stayed focused when it counted," Djokovic said after the match.
De Minaur, ranked 13th, fought hard—especially in the third set—but couldn’t crack Djokovic’s wall-like defense and pinpoint accuracy. The Aussie had his chances, particularly in the final-set tiebreak, but the 24-time Grand Slam champion shut the door when it mattered most.
Eyes on Lorenzo Sonego Next
Djokovic will now face Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, who shocked fourth-seed Daniil Medvedev in a five-set epic earlier on Monday. Though Djokovic leads their head-to-head comfortably, Sonego’s aggressive grass-court play could pose a fresh challenge.
De Minaur Reflects on Tough Loss
For De Minaur, the defeat was a disappointment after a promising run. Still, he spoke with respect for his opponent:
"You play Novak at Wimbledon, and it’s never easy. He’s a legend. I’ll take lessons from today and move forward," said De Minaur.
